The Louisiana Technology Council is assisting Greater New Orleans Inc. (GNO) with an important initiative.

GNO, Inc. is undertaking a comprehensive analysis of the workforce in our ten parish coverage area. This study will be the first of its kind to provide critical information on the post-Katrina labor force in southeast Louisiana. The goal is to better position our regional businesses to meet the challenges of the present and future through a well-trained workforce. A key component of the study is gathering direct input from employers in the region. We are doing this by asking companies like yours to take a 5 minute online survey.

The Employer Survey aspect of the study will provide critical data, analysis, and recommendations that will shape our talent development strategy. The main purpose is to determine current and projected labor demand by job category. The survey will ask employers to rate the quality of the workforce in terms of several skill sets. It will also examine recruiting practices and experiences along with compensation, emerging skill set needs, and other factors critical to the long term success of the region’s economic base. The LTC and GNO Inc. invite all businesses, educators and users of technology in the Greater New Orleans region to submit nominations for the following 2008 eWARD categories:

Outstanding Leadership in Technology

Individual who has advanced the technology sector in the Greater New Orleans region; must have committed time or resources to benefit technology businesses in the region or must have made a major personal contribution toward advancing policies and/or legislation supporting the growth of the technology industry in the region and/or State

Technology Educator of the Year

Must be a teacher or instructor in K-12 public or private school, higher educational institution, technical school or training company; must be an outstanding example of “Information Age Educator” using current technologies to educate, motivate and inspire students to develop careers in technology fields.

Growth Company/Organization of the Year

Must demonstrate a significant rate of growth over the past year. Growth rate may be demonstrated in revenue, products and services sold, and/or number of employees.

New Technology Product of the Year

New product must (1) have major impact in significant markets, (2) have strong potential for sales growth beyond the region, and/or (3) have potential to be a “transforming technology” for future innovation.

Best Application of Technology

Company, educational, scientific, charitable institution, government agency or authority or individual that has creatively applied technology in a manner that results in a meaningful developmental improvement in the areas of process, practice, service and/or support for the betterment of the region and industry.

“Cool Tech” Award

This new category is a “catch all” category. Applications for this award should be based on a technology product or service that can be considered unusual or “cool”; is unique in some way with the ability to possibly distinguish our region from others; can possibly help the region economically in the near future and/or can help the Greater New Orleans Region emerge as a technology center for Louisiana. The “Cool” Tech Award can be any technology implemented in any industry.

Laptops Needed for Non-Profit Teen Workforce Training

Help inner-city youth train as Environmental Field Technicians.

19 more laptop computers are needed in addition to the 6 that the LTC has loaned us. They should be capable of accessing the internet and running basic office software. Donate 1 or more in reasonable working condition and you will have a significant impact on the second semester of this great program. Or donate your time to help refurbish laptops that are in less than tip-top shape. Tax credits are available.

Limitless Vistas, Inc. is a New Orleans based organization dedicated to workforce training and development. Our mission is to improve the employability of disconnected youth, to forge a career path for employment in budding green industries, and to get youth actively involved in the post-Katrina recovery effort.

Our program is a cooperative community partnership designed to train disadvantaged inner-city youth between the ages of 17 and 25 in the environmental skills that are necessary to become Environmental Field Technicians. The program includes technical training, state and federal certifications, development of employment skills, mentoring and job placement assistance.

The Louisiana Technology Council is bringing the LBTC's Mobile Classroom to New Orleans

The Louisiana Business and Technology Center, E. J. Ourso College of Business, LSU and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have partnered in a unique, innovative project for Louisiana. The LBTC mobile classroom, dubbed the “Driving Louisiana’s Economy” initiative, is a custom-designed 18-wheeler trailer retrofitted to house seminars and workshops for small business owners. The self-contained mobile classroom has state-of-the-art audio/visual capabilities, including a large plasma screen monitor, broadband wireless Internet connectivity, and seats up to 24 people for seminars.

The classes are free of charge, but advance reservations are required. We will be offering the following classes:

12:30-2:00   Surviving a Recession
2:15-3:15     Small Business Innovative Research
3:30-4:30     Customer Service

LTC available to assist our member companies and the community

In an effort to assist Louisiana Technology Council member companies and to notify our email subscribers, we have attempted to summarize some important information that you might find useful as you begin you recovery efforts. In addition, the LTC office is open for business. Although our offices are somewhat small, we have some open areas within our facility to assist for a limited number of companies on a first come, first serve basis, any member company who needs a facility to be able to operate a business temporarily (including phone, internet, and other office services).
